On the other end, few organizations may believe that hiring new resources is better than that of retaining the employees (Sundar 2013). Chosen areas Three areas of HRM are complex and different in every organization. It is important for every organization to adhere to a standard set of norms in these areas so that they can be successful. The three areas which are creating a impact on the complete HR process are as follows: - Recruitment Performance management Training and development Activities/incidents that facilitated learning Different activities that take place in the classroom is something similar to that of the activities and incidents that take place in the classroom. This shows that HRM is present in all places, and we are not able to understand them. HRM is a normal process by which the employees are motivated and retained to perform better in the organization. Few of the activities that took place in the classroom which I can connect to HRM are discussed below. Recruitment takes place in the college as well. The college wants the best of students to be associated with them, and similarly, organizations also want the best of people to be associated with them. Colleges look for good students so that they can have a good reputation in the market and this will ultimately attract more students to the college, in the upcoming year. Organizations are willing to attract the best of people so that the productivity of the organization can be increased. This will ultimately help the organization to generate more profits. Due to this, the organization, as well as the college, pays due attention to their recruitment process (Saini 2013). When I applied for this university, I was eager to be a part of this university as I was well aware of the fact that this degree will help me to get the job that I desire. Later, I got to know that the university follows a recruitment process so that the best of students can be hired. The students who were interested in part of the university were asked to fill a form. After 15 days period, the name of shortlisted students was put on the notice board. The shortlisted students were called for a personal round of interview. This helped the college faculty to understand the best of students who are willing to achieve a career. After 15 days, the results were displayed again on the notice board so that the selected students can pay their fees and be a part of the University (Jorge 2016). Training and development also take in the University. The teachers come and teach the students. Teaching is more like training and developing the students for a better future. Organizations train employees so that the employees can deliver what the organization expects from them. In universities, different types of training are given to students so that they are ready to face the corporate world. In many instances, classroom training is given to students. Management study is all about setting up your own business and hence, preparing a business plan is assigned to the students. This is very much like simulation training wherein the students can implement their knowledge in the project (Katou 2015). Performance management is also undertaken in the university at regular intervals. Performance management is an evaluation of the assignments that have been submitted and also the tests that happen in the class, at regular intervals. Depending on the performance in the assignments and tests, students are given ratings and grades (Chris 2013). This helps the students to understand where they stand. In case, if a teacher thinks that the performance of the student is bad then she may call the student and talk to them. This helps them to understand the problem that the student is facing and also the help that the teachers and university should render so that they can be better than what they are today (Aisbett 2015). Applications in workplace The processes in an organization are very much similar to what is done in the university. Organization prefers to term these processes are human resource management, but that is not the case in university. It is important for anyone to understand the relevance of both the processes. Few of the applications of these processes in the workplace are described below. Recruitment in the workplace starts with an advertisement and recruitment is a continuous process in the organization. If there is a vacancy in the organization, then recruitment procedure is initiated. Advertisements are placed so that the potential candidates are aware of the open position. Interested candidates will apply for the open position through various job portals. The recruiters will shortlist the suitable resumes and then they are called for a personal round of interview (Lin 2014). The first round of interview would be a technical round of interview wherein the technical knowledge of the candidate is verified. If the technical round is cleared by the candidate, then he will have to meet the project manager. The project manager will check if this particular person can fit with the existing team. If the project manager is satisfied with the candidate then finally, HR round will take place. The HR will check if the candidate will fit in the organization culture and at the s ame time, salary negotiation will take place in this particular round of interview (Boichenko 2014). Just like in university, training and development are a continuous process in the organization too. Most of the employees are given on the job training by the managers. This kind of training is given when the employees are doing the similar kind of job, but there are small changes due to the processes introduced. When an employee is newly hired, after classroom training, he may be given on-the-job training so that he can implement whatever he has learned in the classroom training. Organizations also plan for online training wherein the employees will have to take up the training as per their availability. This helps the employees to learn without creating an impact on their daily tasks. Classroom training are given to employees based on the need of the organization (Kunle 2013). Regular behavioral training may be given to the employees so that they can grow from technical to managerial level. The trainees are nominated by the managers. Technical training is also given to the employee s so that the employees can upgrade themselves. If an employee is going to be moved to be a completely new project, then he would be given simulation training. In this case, the employee will work on work packs which will be similar to the work packs that they will be handling later (Sharma 2014). Lastly, performance management is undertaken by the HR professionals. Performance management starts with reviewing the performance of the employee. The manager will meet the employee in person, and let him know about the expectations that the organizations have on them. These expectations are agreed upon by the manager as well as the employee and it is set as their KRA. The performance review of the employee will take place based on the KRAs that they have agreed upon. This also helps the employee to understand the direction in which they need to move. Performance appraisals are based on the KRAs that are achieved by the employees. Many organizations consider the employees behavior, customer satisfaction and the KRAs achieved are taken into consideration so that the employee can be offered a rating accordingly (Ogunyemi 2014). To understand the behavior of the employee, the opinion of team members, colleagues and manager will be taken into consideration. The organization will reach o ut to its customer so that they can better understand the performance of the employee. Finally, the employee will be given a chance to rate himself, and then the manager will rate the employee. The employees increment will be dependent on the ratings that they have achieved. Every employee in the organization will work hard to get good ratings. This is the period when the manager checks with the employees on the various training that can be undertaken by the employee so that they can be better (Rolim 2013). Future career plans There are plenty of HR roles that an HR professional can play. Few of the common role HR profiles are as follows: - HR generalist role In this profile, the HR professional will have to undertake end-to-end HR activities. An HR in this profile will take care of recruitment, training and development, training co-ordination, HR operations, performance management and all other Hr related activity. This kind of role exists in small organizations where a small set of HR professionals undertake all the activities (Kidron 2013). Recruitment Most of the organizations have a separate team of recruiters. These recruiters interact with the managers and understand the vacancies that are available in the organization. Accordingly, they will ensure that the candidates are lined up for interviews. They ensure that the interview panel and the candidate are available at the same time so that the desired interview can take place. They follow up with the respective managers to understand the feedback. If the manager likes a particular resource, then offer negotiation will be done. Macbeth Tragic Themes One of the themes in The Tragedy of Macbeth is that of blood. Macbeth is known for his skills as a warrior and his mercilessness that is shown in his killing of MacDonwald, this warrior mentality spreads though into his life and Macbeth begins to make killing a habit. When he is told in a prophecy that he shall be king, Macbeth takes it upon himself to murder, Duncan, king of Scotland, after this murder though he has visions of blood on his hands, blood nothing could remove. As Macbeth becomes more and more ambitious, he also begins to kill more people to get what he wants, more power. The theme of blood is shown throughout the play and it is a problem that Macbeth finds harder and harder to rid himself of after each killing. At the beginning of the play Macbeth is an esteemed member of the army, probably the greatest fighter in all of Scotland. A rebellious tribe led by MacDonwald was defeating the Scots, until Macbeth"single-handedly" defeated the rebels and "unseamed him (MacDonwald) from the nave to th' chops" (Shakespeare 279). This battle gave Macbeth great respect among his peers and even the king himself. Macbeth's savagery at this point in the play was less than at any other time. His barbarity is restricted to the battlefield, but in this the first scene you get a forewarning of Macbeth's future, that of bloodshed and violence. On his way home from the war, 3 witches give him predictions of his future. "All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis! All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter" (Shakespeare 290)! Macbeth was already Thane of Glamis, but he wondered why they would say that he would be Thane of Cawdor and even KING. Macbeth dismissed this as tomfoolery and impossible. But, later Macbeth was told by the king that because of his valiant fighting against MacDonwald that he was given the title of Thane of Cawdor. This made Macbeth think of the prophecy and his chance to be king! The desire for power began to consume Macbeth and his wife, and this ambition caused all of the bloody events that were to follow. Macbeth's tragic flaw, ambition, grew enormously when he heard of his designation as Thane of Cawdor. He wanted the kingship that Duncan held much more, as did his wife, Lady Macbeth. They plotted to hurry Macbeth's reign by killing Duncan themselves. Throughout the play his ambition is a precursor for someone's death. While King Duncan sleeps, Lady Macbeth prepares for her husband to kill the king. Macbeth brutally stabs the king twice, killing him. After the murder, Macbeth is clearly broken, hardly believing what his ambition caused him to do. He says, "What hands are here? Ha! They pluck out mine eyes! Will all great Neptune's ocean wash this blood clean from my hand? No; this mine hand will rather the multitudinous seas incarnadine making the green one red" (Shakespeare 320). Macbeth is troubled by knocking and says that nothing can wash his hands clean, and the blood will make the seas red. Lady Macbeth feels bad to have red hands but to be innocent of the crime itself. She tells him to wash his hands and retire and put on his nightgown so that they will not be suspicious to the watchers. Macbeth wishes he did not know what he had done. The blood on his hands shows that his hands are"stained with guilt", that nothing could be done to change what he did. His guilty conscience is represented by the fact that he will always see his blood covered hands. But instead of this act restraining Macbeth and keeping him from killing again, it causes his ambition to grow and the murders to grow. In the morning when it is found that Duncan was dead, and the evidence Macbeth left shows that the chamberlains killed him. In a false sense of fury Macbeth butchers the chamberlains saying that he did so because in his great love for the king, he felt the need to kill his murderers. The death toll begins to mount as Macbeth's ardor makes him believe that killing is the way out of all his dilemmas. This will eventually cause his own downfall. Macbeth's next assassination comes at the hand of his friend Banquo and his son Fleance. Macbeth's ambition and power has caused him to develop a grave sense of paranoia.

In Los Angeles Washington and Du Boiss ideas were carried out, and Angelenos worked within the system, however, when this failed African-Americans resorted to protests and violence to finally capture the attention needed to address racial segregation. Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) was born a slave in the South, and therefore had a different view of how to handle integration. He spoke of working within the system to gain the respect of whites by proving their worth. (Lecture, 10/22). At just 25 he became the first leader of the Tuskegee Institute which sought to teach industrial trades along with academic education so that students could then go to their communities and teach what they had learned (Horton and Horton, 227). Many say he took a defeatist approach, but Washington was living in the South during one of the worst lynching waves in history and was trying to help his community survive through extreme conditions (Horton and Horton, 230). Washington had many critics, he was a leader before many of the known racial leaders throughout history were born, and it was easy for them to criticize the past. Even though he lived and died before the turmoil of Los Angeles in the 1930s and 40s, his ideas carried on. The Tuskegee Insti tute served as a great resource for African-Americans and is a private, black university today. At the onset of WWII the Tuskegee Institute famously trained the first black fighter pilots in the Army Air Corps (Smith, 61). Washingtons views were to help the people from the bottom up and give them a foundation from which they could grow. One of Washingtons critics was W.E.B. Du Bois (1868-1963), an abolitionist who wanted to fight for freedom. He believed in education and that blacks needed a liberal arts background (Lecture, 10/22). Du Bois grew up in a small Northern town, which was largely integrated, and did not have to endure the severe oppression those in the South did. Nonetheless, he still encountered discrimination and fought to put an end to it. His plan of action was a Talented-Tenth, highly educated African-Americans who would pave the way for others and open up job opportunities. In contrast to Washington, his was a top down approach to the problem. As one of the leaders of the NAACP, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Du Bois and others were able to take legal action to advance desegregation at a national level. For example, the NAACP was the driving force that argued in the Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 (Lecture, 11/10). This case led to the court ruling that separate classrooms were unequal and that de jure racial segregation was unconstitutional as a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth amendment (Lecture, 11/12). The culture of African-Americans in Los Angeles at the outset of the 20th Century was very different from that of the East. As Charlotta Bass, the editor of the California Eagle, wrote in the 1930s â€Å"[Los Angeles] was a sober residential and business settlement† (Smith, 29). No one cared about the Talented-Tenth who were leading the Harlem Renaissance at this time, feeling that these artists merely amused whites and did not show an accurate portrayal of the African-American population. They felt that these African-American elites had no real affect on their lives and the circumstances of their treatment (Smith, 26-28). The first black immigrants to Los Angeles were mostly educated and came looking for work (Smith, 23). Because of the growing population, the African-American community was formed and separated by de facto segregation from whites with the attitude that blacks should â€Å"avoid that block, that cop, that hour† (Smith, 43). African-Americans were able t o form a community, located around Central Avenue, where they could maintain businesses but were subject to police brutality in their community and especially in white areas. For example, when a Mexican girl was arrested in front of a black business and several African-American men tried to defend her and fought the officer, later that night â€Å"over a dozen vice squad cops† came back to the business and lined up all of the blacks that were inside to beat them one by one (Smith, 19). Though there were run ins with the police the population was still controlled enough that African-Americans could stay in their confined communities and continue to build their local economy. This was an example of African-Americans following Washingtons ideal of building personal wealth and going along with the rules in the hope that whites would later accept them. At the start of the Second World War, African-Americans were being drafted to join the military but still not given equal rights to fight, have equal pay, or be able to further their military careers. In a letter to the Pittsburgh Courier, the most popular black newspaper in the country, 15 mess attendants stationed on the U.S.S. Philadelphia wrote of the conditions and treatment of blacks in the armed forces. They described their jobs as â€Å"domestic servants picking up after the white man† (Smith, 43). African-Americans began to question why they were remaining loyal to a country that treated them as second-class citizens and helping fight injustice abroad when there was discrimination happening at home (Smith, 25). Black leaders decided to form a mass movement to change the laws and A. Philip Randolph was able to organize it (Smith, 45). He issued a challenge in the California Eagle to end discrimination in the armed forces as well as defense factories and threatened a m arch on Washington of 100,000 blacks if needs were not met. Once the movement gained momentum, the NAACP agreed with the approach (Smith, 47). This was one of the first times African-Americans from Los Angeles were trying to work with those in power to change law for the betterment of the black community. After the formation of Bronzeville, formerly Little Tokyo, the influx in population became so great that living conditions worsened with not much being done about it (Smith, 147). Because there were so many people this became the perfect recipe for what Los Angeles ghettos are most known for, random acts of violence. Many of those who had been living in Central Avenue were used to getting by under Washingtons mode of minding their own business and staying within their community lines. But as African-Americans from the South migrated West, they were no longer under the restrictions of the Jim Crow laws and were ready to use any means necessary to get equal treatment. â€Å"When a white owner of the Paramount Cafà © on the north end of the Avenue refused service to a group of blacks, he probably gave it no thought at all, for it was something he had likely done many times before. But when they rose up and tore the place apart, perhaps he gave it a second thought.† (Smith, 147) In the end the idealistic approaches of Washington and Du Bois proved to be ineffectual for the every day life of African-Americans on Central Avenue. Both leaders of the East criticized one another, but still had a similarity. They tried to change laws and work within the system to end discrimination and to change the feeling whites felt toward African-Americans. African-Americans in Los Angeles learned that even if they changed a law, it did not mean it would be implemented. And that no matter how much time they gave whites to recognize their worth, whites would continue to exploit their labor for economical gain and to maintain power. It was when they came together that African-Americans realized the power they had. â€Å"Power and pressure†¦lie and flow from the masses†¦the masses united for a definite purpose,† said by Randolph (Smith, 46). Though the legal end to segregation was decades away by the end of the 1940s blacks were talking back and no longer (Smith, 277). Overview of the Unit Reading fluency is an extremely difficult area to assess and instruct. In general, there are three areas that are addressed that make up fluency phonemic awareness (being able to say words and understand the construct of the letters that make up the word), grammar and comprehension. These three areas formed together help a teacher assess the students they have. However, it is still very difficult to classify since fluency seems to come natural to many students especially by grade 8 (Rasinski, 2004). Keeping all of this in mind there still needs to be a definitive gauge for assessment. This unit is based around some reading aloud in class. After the students have read on their own time, having them reread the various passages out loud will help to increase their fluency. According to the book Classrooms that Work, â€Å"repeated readings is a way to help students recognize high-frequency words more easily, thereby strengthening their ease of reading† (Addison-Wesley 1998). This will also allow for the next area of significance to become a link in the fluency chain-vocabulary. The student’s readings will provide opportunities to ask them about the various vocabulary words in this unit. The unit will stress various vocabulary words and a higher order of thinking to gain comprehension. As they read, the teacher can pick out these words and engage the students to see if they comprehend what is being said. If the students do not understand the words, the next step cannot happen which is comprehension. Comprehension and fluency are forever linked. One cannot happen without the other. The easiest way to label it is students must be able to understand what they read. That is why in many younger grades, grade levels are not simply based on the student being able to read the words, but to what degree they understand what they are reading. The main construct of the lesson is to expand the knowledge of the students and have them reading something outside of their normal realm. Students should always feel they are learning something new (Grabe, 2010). This book and unit will allow for that to happen. Reading aloud by the students, by the teacher, and discussions about various vocabulary and plot themes will make this lesson successful. Diverse Racial Experience Essay

The chapter by Ruth Frankenberg entitled, â€Å"Introduction: Points of Origin, Points of Departure†, argues that the way one is perceived in society drastically changes their experience and advantage over others. Therefore, white women are often distinguished by their whiteness which gives them a more diverse racial experience (Frankenberg, 1993, pp. 1). With being white comes various additional components that set it apart from the other raced women of the world. Moreover, being a white woman automatically links them to a more favourable position of superiority in the way that they are often identified. This means that they get certain benefits by being white, as colonialism positioned them to have a large portion of control and authority over others. This provides them with the advantage to define the public and its individual beings the way they believe or want it to be. Moreover, they see their whiteness as a normative position in society that is invisible. Frankenberg`s goal is to make whiteness visible so that a white person can identify that they have an advantage over a person of colour by virtue of their skin. She also takes into consideration the intersectionality of class, culture, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality in a white racialized body (Frankenberg, 1993, pp. 1). Colonization is an important factor to Frankenberg because of how it uncovers the concept of whiteness and how it subsequently became associated to a position of authority and power. In the article `The Murder of Pamela George`, the author observes that history of colonial violence permitted white men to annex land that did not belong to them and treat it as though they were entitled to it (Razack, 2004 ,pp.127). This perception has perpetuated the control and authority of white people throughout history. A critique in the second wave of feminism made white feminists reconsider what and for whom they were advocating. The movement of feminism was envisioned to include all women but it only targeted one specific group of white middle class women. This occurred because the women could only see there suffering from their particular standpoint. This is seen in the article â€Å"The Problem That Has No Nameâ€Å" by Betty Friedan since she assumes that all women are homogeneous and all have the same lived experiences. She does not consider race, class, and sexuality as a factor in feminism (1997). White women mostly consider their whiteness as undetectable and thus not subject to racism (Frankenberg, 1993, pp. 3). These white feminists in the second wave were unintentionally being racist towards other women; this made them unsure about how to precede and resolve this issue (Frankenberg, 1993, pp. 4). Frankenberg educated herself about racism by positioning herself to learn from the standpoint of women of colour. Enakshi Dua stated in her article that, in order to understand how race and gender are interconnected one has to listen to the lived experiences of women of colour (2005, pp. 64). Frankenberg followed this method formulating questions that she wanted to investigate to find out how racism affects a white women`s life and how society propagates racism through societal means. After answering these questions Frankenberg proceeded to figure out how white women can fight against racism. Most white women believe that their race is invisible and do not realize that it gives them a distinct experience in the world. This is because the dominant class structures society and thus normalizes whiteness. White women and women of colour have distinct experiences that are subject to how they experience racism. Whiteness is socially constructed and it does affect a white women`s life. However, white women usually tended to regard racism as something that has no effect on them and that women of colour only have to live through (Frankenberg, 1993, pp. 6). This belief does not put the onus on the white people and it does not identify the perpetrator of the subjection. Racism does not just happen, it is constructed (Tim Wise 2005). Therefore, it impacts the lives of white women which makes race and gender intersectional for all women not just women of colour. There is a denial in the observations that there is one specific dominating male gender. There is also an abundance of only white women`s experiences by this masculine hegemon. After women realized that the world view did not only have to be seen on a male standpoint the world started to shift views (Frankenberg, 1993, pp. 8). Women of colour now want to focus on a standpoint from a radicalized point of view in order to stop racism. Moreover, since white people are the oppressors they cannot see how their situation is reinforcing racism. People of colour are the oppressed and know exactly how they are underprivileged. Subsequently, women of colour were the first to see how gender, race and class forms a persons experience in life (Frankenberg, 1993, pp. 8). White women did not see their race as something that was constructed. They did not see themselves as racialized because they were coming from a position of privilege. This position for a white person was normalized throughout American history. Therefore, in order to deconstruct race white women have to admit it is something that affects them (Frankenberg, 1993, pp. 11). Race is in a fluid motion and changes constantly with society because it is an economic and political construct. Historically, the white dominance was vindicated because of false biological account that white people were superior (Frankenberg, 1993, pp. 13). This biology justified colonization as well as the enslavement of people of colour that soon followed. The justification shifted to culture as the reason that made people inferior and if they integrated with American culture they would achieve success on merit like white people. However, this belief kept blaming people of colour for their position in society.People of colour were first seen as different from white people, then there was an embrace of colour blindness, and finally people realized that they needed to be able to see the differences in society so they can explain them. This last movement’s purpose was to make people aware of race; this was led by the people of colour themselves. They did not want to be invisible because there situation was not improving because people were ignoring the underlying problem. The racialization of people of colour and white people was constructed with colonization. The European culture was embedded into the way the United States constructed its country. This constructed whiteness as belonging and being a person of colour as an outsider (Dua 2005, pp. 60). The dominant western culture –which was white- positioned itself to dominant over the other races. This created the standard citizen that belonged and made people of colour not included in the so called superior western culture. Frankenberg`s argument illuminates how the dominant class rationalized whiteness as not being racialized. Colonization formed the dominant race and reproduced it through society. By normalizing whiteness the white people did not need to consider how it benefited them and subsequently how it negatively affected people of colour. By naming whiteness, Frankenberg will be able to pinpoint how that perception can change so that people can be equal even with there differences. In conclusion, by admitting that white people are racialized will assist anti-racist feminists in their mission to stop the racialization of all people. This would stop white people from believing that they are the only ones that belong in North America and eventually create a system based on meritocracy rather then privilege by virtue of a persons skin.

The Sirens of Titan essays Throughout the novel, there are events and characters which have definite parallels in modern world religions such as Christianity. The trials and tribulations of Malachi Constant, and perhaps even other characters in the novel, and the story of Jesus as laid forth in the bible seem to possess similar aspects. Before delving into the specific areas which may contain parallels, perhaps it would be best to consider what the areas in the novel are being compared to: Jesus and his life. Roughly twenty years ago, a movement began in the religious community in which theologians and historians alike began an attempt at separating the "historical Jesus" from the Jesus found in the bible. What has slowly become apparent is that the Jesus found in the bible is much different than the actual man. In essence, what is seen in the bible is an image of Jesus, rather than the real Jesus. This concept of image vs. reality in religion is also reflected in The Sirens of Titan. But who c! reates this image? In the case of Jesus, religion was the force which began to interpret his life and present him as something other than he was. In The Sirens of Titan, a similar image-creating force continually appears where one would instead expect to find the "God" to Malachi's "Jesus"; religion is substituted for God in the novel. He was the wisest of men, capable of walking on water, healing the sick, blessing the lives of men and guiding the way to eternal happiness in the kingdom of heaven. The employer feels it so difficult to cope with his employee's decision to disobey his master's orders. The tragedy arises from Bartleby's reluctance and inability to find out the reasons for his passive rebellion, and the employer's failure to understand and accommodate the reasons for Bartleby's resistance. Other critics argued that it is a parable of human condition in general. Any way the modern readership of the story is largely due to its capability to generate various interpretations. These various interpretations happen due to the numerous meanings that the words can bring to the readers. This can be done most perfectly by introducing an unreliable narrator. The narrator in Melville's story, the lawyer serves this purpose beautifully. Many critics remarked about Melville's use of this unreliable narrator. Lawyer himself admits that he is a man of assumptions, and his prejudice prevents him, in many occasions, to give the accurate details of the events. After some initial events, like the lawyer's description of Turkey's unpredictable behavior, it is clear for the reader that they need to interpret everything that the narrator tells. This gives a wide opportunity and scope for the readers. The narrator's final statement, "Ah Bartleby! Ah humanity" (Melville 2006), is considered as the most controversial statement in the story. Some traditional critics interpreted it as the statement of a fraud, who fails to measure Bartleby's essence or a sensitive penetration of a sensible man to the essentiality of meaning. These contrasting definitions points out to the language of Melville, which gives numerous interpretations to the readers. When referring to Moby-Dick, James Guetti has opined that Melville's language is "pervasive, special and artificial kinds of languageserve to draw our attention to the limitations of such language" (Guetti 1967). As in The Metamorphosis, a metamorphosis is seen through out the story is the case of language. This linguistic metamorphosis suggests the change of lawyer's attitude towards Bartleby at the very crucial juncture when Bartleby's passivity becomes a threat to the professionalism of the lawyer. History of Cancer Theories Defining Cancer Cancer is a group of diseases involving out-of-control growth of abnormal cell growth in a part of the body. Ancient Evidence of Cancer The worlds first recorded case of cancer was discovered in Egypt and dates back to about 2600 BC. Its called the Edwin Smith Papyrus, an ancient papyrus named after the dealer who bought it in 1862. The papyrus is a copy of the collected teachings of the great Egyptian physician Imhotep who live around 2625 BC. It describes 48 cases of injuries, fractures, wounds, dislocations and tumors. Every case is followed by a concise discussion of treatments. Case forty-five describes breast cancer as a bulging mass in the breast, for which there is no cure. In around 440 BC, the Greek historian Herodotus recorded in The Histories that Atossa, the queen of Persia, had a tumor upon her breast. She sought a self-imposed quarantine and ultimately allowed Democedes, her Greek slave, to cut off the tumor. In addition to historical descriptions, there are also evidence of cancer found in mummified specimens of malignant tissues of cancers that had somehow preserved from ancient times. In 1914, a team of archaeologists found a tumor on a two-thousand-year old Egyptian mummy. In 1990, Arthur Aufderheide, a paleopathologist, found cancers in naturally desiccated mummies in a thousand-year-old gravesite in the southern tip of Peru. The most striking finding, though, is not that cancer existed in the distant past, but that it was rare. In ancient times, people didnt live long enough to get cancer because cancer is a disease of older people, with incidence rates increasing with age for most cancers. Origin of the Word Cancer The great Greek physician Hippocrates (460-370 BC), who is considered to be the Father of medicine, used the word karkinos to describe malignant tumors because the finger-like spreading projections from such tumors reminded him of a crab. The Romans later translated the Greek term into cancer, the Latin word for crab. Claudius Galen (130-200 AD), another Greek physician, used the word oncos (Greek term for swelling) to describe tumors. It is the origin of the word oncology, the study of cancer. Old Theories about Cancer Humoral Theory (400 BC) Hippocrates believed that the body contained 4 humors (body fluids), (1) blood, (2) black bile, (3) yellow bile, and (4) phlegm. Any imbalance of these fluids will result in disease. Hippocrates had opined that cancer was best untreated, since patients live longer that way. Galenic Theory (160 AD) Claudius Galen, an influential Greek physician, took Hippocrates humoral theory to the next level by classifying all illnesses in terms of excesses of various fluids. Inflammation was attributed to an excess of blood; tubercles was the excess of phlegm; jaundice was the excess of yellow bile; Cancer was the excess of black bile.ÂÂ   Galenic theory suggested that cancer was the result of a systemic malignant state. Cutting the tumor out would not cure the disease. We should try systemic medicines to purge the black bile instead. This black bile theory of cancer was standard through the Middle Ages for over 1400 years until the birth of modern human anatomy in the 16th century. In 1533, Andreas Vesalius, who is considered the founder of modern human anatomy, arrived at the University of Paris to learn Galenic anatomy and pathology. To his disappointment, there were no map of human organs to guide him in surgeries. So he decided to create his own anatomy map, and scoured the graveyards around Paris for bones and bodies as specimens. In 1538, after becoming the professor of anatomy at the University of Padua, he published his drawings which showed anatomical charts of the blood and nervous systems.ÂÂ   He wondered whether he could put the charts for practical use to treat diseases. The Galens humoral theory of disease required the patient be bled and purged to squeeze the overgrown humors out of the body. So he tried to locate the four humors in his chart. The lymphatic system carried a pale fluid, the blood vessels were filled with blood, yellow bile was in the liver. But he could not find Galens black bile. He kept quiet about his discovery that there was no black bile, and left his drawings just as he saw things. In 1793, Matthew Baillie, an anatomist in London, wanted to map the body in its diseased abnormal state. He too was looking for black bile, but couldnt find it on charts of a normal body. He thought that black bile may not have existed in normal tissue, but tumors should have been full of it. So he started mapping the body with tumors. But he could not find the black bile anywhere not even in the tumors. Like Vesalius, he left his anatomy and cancer drawing the way he actually saw it.

In the play, Marco is very important. After all, he was the one person who killed Eddie Carbone which is the main event in the play. When Marco comes into the play for the first time, he is proven to be the most mature brother who has a quality life worth living. â€Å"What can I do? The older one is sick in chest. My wife – she feeds them from her own mouth. I tell you the truth; if I stay there they will never grow up. They eat the sunshine.† Having children, Marco might feel they are a motivation to earn money to keep them alive as well as himself. The reason Marco came to Brooklyn, America to help and pay for food for his family as he would send money back to his wife in Italy to care for them. â€Å"My wife – I want to send right away maybe twenty dollars †¦ because I could send them a little more if I stay.† Marco knows he has an obligation to Eddie and is trying to be good so he can stay in America in the house to earn money for his family. So to make sure he can stay, he is trying not to let Rodolph ruin his chances either by doing ridiculous tasks like singing which Marco thinks is inappropriate at the time so tells him, â€Å"No – no! †¦ You’ll be quiet †¦ You’ll be quiet. He also thinks Rodolph should tame himself down. ‘’They paid for your courage. The English like courage. But once is enough.’’ He is loyal and strong. He thinks before he acts which gives the impression that he is focused. He only punished Eddie by killing him as he felt threatened which is not a selfish action. He is the antagonist in the play and the Sicilian avenging angel that Alfieri hints at his comment to the audience. â€Å"A man works, raises his family, goes bowling, eats, gets old and then dies. Now, as the weeks passed there was a future, there was a trouble that would not go away.† Marco is also very important to the play as he is very respectful towards Eddie to begin with. Marco is willing to do any work to support his family as he is very proud of his wife and he is grateful to Eddie for his help and for giving him the opportunity to live in his home and work down the docks. Marco is realistic and tries to control Rodolpho’s exaggerations to keep them out of trouble. Even though during the play, Marco is furious and vengeful to some of the things Eddie does like snitching on them to the immigration officers; He is responsible, respectful, strong but silent towards his family, Eddie, Beatrice and even Catherine. Marco tries to bridge the increasing gap between Rodolpho and Eddie however as soon as Marco feels offended by Eddie he feels he needs to prove his strength and authority to him by lifting a chair up by one leg by one arm which is he successful in whereas Eddie cannot lift the chair. Marco if a family man because even though Marco cannot understand American justice when Alfieri tried to explain it and promised Eddie he will not betray or harm him if he promised the same, he did not apologise to Eddie as his honour means everything to him. As Marco will probably get deported back to Italy for immigration and killing Eddie, he is happy that Rodolpho has a chance of a green card a family with Catherine.
